How The Dance Machine is Giving Back to Their Community

Owner Brett Anderson and his spouse Kathryn Lemmon started Back to Basics Project in early 2008. By May, their non-profit status from the IRS became official.

One of the project goals is distribution of pet food to needy homebound seniors and disabled people. As part their pet food pantry program, they are collaborating with Area 10 Agency on Aging. Area 10 operates a "people" food pantry and makes home deliveries monthly to seniors and disabled persons in three area cities, Bloomington, Ellettsville and Spencer, Indiana. Twenty-two drivers are currently taking part, each with multiple stops.

Starting in June 08, volunteer drivers took pet food from Back to Basics Project to seniors and disabled individuals. All recipients of this home delivery food program are pre-screened to be eligible. Basics is "piggybacking" on their successful volunteer program to produce a win-win situation.

This type of pet food pantry helps disadvantaged people, fixed-income seniors and their pets.

Thanks to some grant funding, Back to Basics is expanding the program into other rural communities in central Indiana and southern Indiana, working with already-existing food pantries. Toward that goal, thus far they have also delivered six loads of pet food to a church food pantry in Spencer, Indiana. They serve approximately 130 families and the number is growing rapidly.

Back to Basics Project added their third church-based food pantry, in Gosport, Indiana in late November. With the addition of this pantry the program is helping approximately 300 families per month.

As an added benefit, Brett and Kathryn believe this will reduce the number of pets surrendered to area animals shelters. Your help will assure our pet food pantry program and our collaboration with Area 10 Agency on Aging can continue.
