Meet Our Entertainers TANAGER STRINGS
Tanager Strings is one of the few groups that actually practices together. It may come as a surprise to some but most string trios and quartets are formed by a group "leader" who brings together several musicians on an as needed basis. Sometimes they meet each other for the first time at your event! With Tanager Strings you get talented, experienced musicians who have played and practiced together for years. They specialize in wedding ceremonies but play for all kinds of occasions including: wedding receptions, company parties, church programs, rehearsal dinners, Christmas parties and anniversaries. Julie Metcalf Julie Metcalf, a founding member and the heart and soul of the group, began playing violin in 1959. She has played in the Bloomington Symphony, the Columbus Philharmonic, and the Carmel Symphony. As a student at Indiana State University, she was a member of many university ensembles along with playing in the Terre Haute Symphony, where she remains a member today. She also often subs with other area orchestras, and has played with many ensembles over the years. Julie also enjoys teaching music to youngsters through private lessons. Joyce Silletti Joyce plays viola with the Tanager Strings. She graduated from Indiana State University magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education. She has a Master's Degree in Music from the University of Illinois where she studied violin privately with Virginia Farmer. She taught beginning strings through high school orchestra for 15 years in the Rockford Illinois Public Schools. She played first violin in the Rockford Symphony Orchestra for 5 years and currently plays first violin in the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra. Sandy Cox Sandra Cox is an original member of the Tanager Strings which formed in 1997. She played with the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra and was principle cellist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Arkady Orlavsky, the principle cellist in the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Prior to the Tanager Strings, she performed as the cellist in the group "The Undeniables", which consisted of a flute, violin, cello and harp. April Ayers April Baker-Ayers is a violinist with the Tanager Strings and a full-time private violin and viola teacher in the Bloomington area. She is a graduate of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where she studied both classical and jazz violin. Her teachers include celebrated classical violinists Henryk Kowalski and Yuval Yaron and renowned jazz educators Jamey Aebersold and David Baker. During April's time at Indiana University she was a member of the David Baker Jazz String Quartet and played in a number of university orchestral and chamber ensembles. She is currently a member of the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra and the Bloomington Pops Orchestra. REPERTOIRE The range of these ladies is amazing; from classical to jazz to pop to sacred music they can do it all. Here is a small sampling of their repertoire of over 400 songs. Please note that not all songs can be played by both the quartet and trio. Weddings Classical Religious Christmas Pop/Standards Rock/Etc
